AAF FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST HHS AND DHS OVER REFUSAL TO COMPLY WITH FOIA REQUESTS AFTER MIGRANT HOUSIN
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the American Accountability Foundation (AAF) filed lawsuits against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for failing to comply with several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests over the non-profit, Family Endeavors, Inc.’s (Endeavors) no-bid contract to house illegal aliens.
“Aside from the efforts at DHS and HHS to cover up the crisis at our southern border with this housing contract, they also displayed the worst type of government cronyism,” Tom Jones, AAF Founder, said. “Instead of ignoring our FOIA requests, DHS and HHS need to come clean to the American people about the clear conflict of interest with this contract, and prioritize sound policy over political favors for their friends.”
Back in May 2021, AAF released a copy of the no-bid contract that DHS awarded to Endeavors to house illegal aliens at a Best Western. As AAF pointed out last year, the timing and the non-profit the government chose were suspicious given Endeavor’s connection to the Biden administration and specifically a senior member of the Transition team. The contract’s language also made it clear that the Biden administration refused to admit that the individuals being housed are in the country illegally. One clause, for example, reads, “Residents will not be referred to as ‘prisoners,’ ‘detainees,’ ‘aliens,’ or ‘inmates.’”
Endeavors obtained a contract to provide housing to immigrant families arrested at the southern border and commenced their work on March, 2021. Though they are supposed to be a non-profit, Endeavors’ leadership is tightly connected to the Biden administration, with Andrew Lorenzen-Strait being employed by the Biden transition team before he was hired by Endeavors. AAF’s FOIA seeks more information on whether or not there was a quid pro quo between members of DHS and HHS with Endeavors based on this blatant conflict of interest with Lorenzen-Strait.
